RC Planes for Beginners

Learning to fly a RC plane is truly an enjoyable experience. Whether you are just returning to the field after being away, or are simply mesmerized by these scale machines, A Main Hobbies aims to be your one stop hobby shop. With RC plane kits and parts for all skill levels, you're sure to find what you need to take flight.

Trainers and RTF Plane Kits

One of the best parts about learning to fly a RC plane includes the number of available models that help you learn the ropes. For example, the trainer planes available in our selection are completely assembled and have all the necessary parts to get you on the field in record time. Trainers are a great way to learn the basics because you can focus on your moves - not wavering wings!

Almost Ready to Fly and Ready to Fly (RTF) plane kits also provide a means for learning the basics. Most feature a dual combination of large wing spans and a light overall size to keep your flight experience smooth and steady. With a consistent airspeed, you can master beginner aerobatics.

When purchasing a RC airplane kit, look for the following features:

  • Basic Repair: No matter if you're flying at the local field or in your backyard, you are going to damage your RC plane, especially if you are just learning. Make sure you save your owner's manual and understand what common repairs may be needed before you buy. Invest in the right tools and maybe a plane kit with fewer pieces.
  • Control Setup: Primary control means you dictate the direction of the rudder, throttle, and elevator. Make sure your RC plane kit offers primary control and not something too advanced like aileron control.
  • RC Airplane Parts: Take an inventory of what is included in your RC plane kit and make sure you order the other parts you need to take flight. Commonly needed items include a RC airplane engine, battery pack and charger, propeller, ESC, and a radio system. Your radio system should consist of a RC transmitter, servo, and an aircraft receiver.

As you advance in your RC flight proficiency, you can look to sport or precision flying, soaring 3D aerobatics, and maybe even scale racing. A Main Hobbies is here to help you advance and provides you with the right tools to become an advanced pilot.

Learning to Fly

After you decide which RC airplane kit will work for you, it's time to hit the field! Here are some concepts to keep in mind:

  • Wind: The calmer the air, the better. With gusting winds, you will have little control over your RC plane. Make sure to look outside at how fast the trees are moving or take a look at the weather report before heading out.
  • Taking Flight: Always launch your RC plane into the wind. Placing the model in front of you with the nose of the plane lined up at the horizon, gently toss your RC plane upward.
  • Environment: Make sure you do not fly in a circle around you. It is a best practice to keep your RC plane in front of you at all times. Develop a healthy distance between you, observers, and your plane to avoid compromising safety.
  • As RC enthusiasts ourselves, A Main Hobbies understands learning to fly a RC plane can be challenging but ultimately, rewarding. Feel free to contact us with any questions.
