Chico State University’s NASA Lunabotics Team

March 26th, 2012

A Main Hobbies has become a proud sponsor of a Chico State University senior project team that will be competing at NASA’s 3rd annual Lunabotics Mining Competition held at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on May 21-26th, 2012.

Background
The Lunabotics Mining Competition is run by NASA to inspire interest and innovation in space exploration operations. This challenge promotes the advancement of lunar soil excavation as the first step towards the utilization of the moon’s resources. The excavation would be essential in habitat foundation and oxygen extraction from the lunar soil.

The Chico State Lunabotics Team is a group of seven seniors that will design, build and test a fully autonomous or remote controlled lunar excavator.

The Competition
The competition involves the design and construction of a mobile, remotely controlled or fully autonomous excavating robot that will collect at least 10 kg of simulated lunar soil over a period of 10 minutes and deposit it in a specified location. The robot will be placed in a random starting location and have to navigate around obstacles and craters. Therefore, effective sensors and efficient control logic are essential to the success of the design, and will require extensive multi-disciplinary cooperation.

The Robot

The robot was designed using SolidWorks, a 3D modeling tool and is currently being manufactured.  The power will be supplied by two ProTek R/C Li-Poly packs and the vision will come from using an Xbox Kinect camera. It will weigh about 70 lbs and be a size of 30″ x 30″ x 60″. A Main Hobbies is closely working with the team giving them component advice and fully supporting them in their preparations for the competition.
