This past weekend I did a bit of a road commute to the SWorkz Challenge at Silver Dollar Speedway. I chose to drive there and back each day (Hour and a half commute each way) and i’m sure i’ll never opt for that option again. Event wise the track was great. It was a typical Kevin Jelich layout and by that I mean lots of off-camber air. You couldn’t just take a jump straight and expect to land in between the pipes. Having the ability to move your car in the air and do whips to get it where you wanted definitely provided an advantage. Track was a lot of fun and I think everyone enjoyed it.
I ran the three standard 1/8th classes. In E-buggy my DEX408v2 was dialed most of the weekend. I took TQ of Q1 and Q2 to get the overall TQ. In the mains I took a close fought A1 win by a couple seconds and in A2 I closed it out with a 1 lap victory as my car was dialed in A2 and felt absolutely great. Something I tried this weekend was the Tekin T8i Indoor motor. This shaved 50g off the weight of the car and I did everything else I could to lighten my car. All told I got it to around 3,250g. This was also running 4700 ProTek Shorty packs. First time I tried it in practice I ran for 12:45 seconds and it took 4200 mAh. The power band was awesome to me. SUPER smooth and nothing compromised on the top end. This is going to be my new standard set-up I think as it was great on this semi big outdoor track. The real test will be this week in Alabama at AMS.
In Truggy I was just a tiny bit off pace in qualifying. Mainly due to just making crashes here and there. I seemed to have the fastest lap in each qualifier but would make one mistake and the field was very tight at the top. So I got 4th in both the first two qualifiers. (I ended up leaving after second qualifiers on Saturday because of my commute so I only ran 2 rounds in all of my classes.) Ended up qualifying 5th overall in Truggy. In the main though I would follow the train around for the first couple laps, then a group crashed in the top right of the track and I got around and into 2nd. For the most part I stayed there then next 10 minutes or so until the leader flamed. I got the lead and led for 5 minutes or so but he caught back up on my mistakes and took back the lead and I held on for 2nd in the end as my rear shock blew out and I just tried to hang on to it! Overall pleased with the 2nd place finish!
In Nitro Buggy I was running my new DNX8 prototype. Overall super pleased with my new car and learning more about it each race I get to run it. This weekend I got to TQ the first qualifier and take a hard fought 2nd in Q2 after a 7 second first lap crash. Overall even with missing Q3 I still took the overall TQ! In the 45 minute A I was looking to keep the momentum going. At the start I led for a couple laps before I shorted the mountain at the top left of the track and landed on the roof. Fell back to third and over the next couple laps fought back into 2nd and then made one of my best passes of the weekend into 1st where I would extend out a couple second lead. Coming into first pit stops though I flamed upon receiving the full tank of fuel. Got fired back up and was in 2nd, but about 10 seconds back. Over the next 7 minutes caught back up to battle again for the lead before my next pitstop and same thing happened again. Now 10 seconds behind again I was able to catch back up a little before the next stop and was battling most of the time for 2nd/3rd. On the next stop we used a fuel bottle instead and no flame issue. Two stops later and things were starting to lean out and something was feeling off. I then started having some mystery flame outs on the track. Ended up having to retire 39 minutes into the 45 minute final. Turns out my pipe wire came out and pipe was flopping around in the car and it destroyed the rear engine gasket and created a bad air leak. Oh well, That part will be double loctited for next race!
Overall had a fun weekend of racing. Got to pit next to a good group of guys and it was great meeting some new people. Next I leave on Wednesday for AMS where i’ll be running the same 3 classes again. It is also going to be my biggest ever representation/sponsorship for LutzRC at an event. I’m going to have my own little booth area where i’ll be selling my engines/pipes/clutches so if your there stop on by and check it all out!
